The Civil Wars – Irreconcilable Differences
“We sincerely apologize for the canceling of all of our tour dates. It is something we deeply regret. However, due to internal discord and irreconcilable differences of ambition we are unable to continue as a touring entity at this time. We thank each and every one of you for your amazing love & support. Our sincere hope is to have new music for you in 2013.” – Joy Williams & John Paul White.
Apparently The Civil Wars are, sadly, experiencing their own civil war, which has resulted in a complete break down of their live concert schedule as announced through their FaceBook and Twitter pages on November 6.
Williams and White met in 2008 during a song writing session or "writing camp" at a music studio in Nashville, Tennessee. According to their web site, the group’s name, The Civil Wars, and their song "Poison and Wine", sum up their thematic direction. They are about the good, the bad, and the ugly of relationships. Although, at this time, it would appear that their relationship has taken a turn into an area beyond the bad and the ugly.
As stated in their website’s “About” section: "’Poison & Wine’ isn’t just The Civil Wars’ breakout song. It’s also a thematic declaration of intent for this utterly complementary odd couple, encapsulating everything suggested in the duo’s name when it comes to exploring the conflicts that arise as part of couplehood. Speaking of which: They aren’t, that—a couple, that is. But they’re far from insulted if you mistake them for An Item in the storied tradition of the Swell Season, Richard and Linda Thompson, or other famous duos whose on-again, off-again relationships offstage complicated their stage relations.” It would seem these complications have risen to greater heights…
On the up side, Joy and John did state that “Our sincere hope is to have new music for you in 2013”, which would mean that they still have plans to release more recorded music, so perhaps this internal breakdown is not the complete break up that many are claiming it to be. The simple message of cancelling their tour was shared through their social media alone, and no additional formal announcements have yet to be made, so at this point only speculation is possible. The only thing that is known for sure as of right now is that they have cancelled all of their upcoming performances and have deleted the tour calendar on their official website.
The duo also attached a postscript to their announcement, showing themselves to be able to rise above their personal problems and to think about their fans.
“PS – We understand that there are many of you stuck with service charges and travel reservations due to our abrupt cancelations. Please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org if there are costs incurred that you would like to be reimbursed for, include a scan or attachment to your receipt(s) of the costs, and we will do our best to reimburse you for non-refundable charges.”
