Doc Watson in Boone, North Carolina
"Doc Watson – Just one of the people" • www.tinyurl.com/doc-watson-sculpture • A life-sized bronze statue of music icon Doc Watson, a native of Deep Gap, North Carolina, is now completed and was installed and unveiled on Friday, June 24th, 2011 in Boone, North Carolina. The statue is the brainchild of John Cooper of The Mast General Store, and a project of the Downtown Boone Development Association. The bronze sculpture is located on the northeast corner of the intersection of King and Depot streets. The statue was created by noted sculptor Alex Hallmark, and features the musician seated on a bench playing his favorite guitar.
"Doc Watson got his start in downtown Boone as a blind musician. We just thought it was a wonderful idea to have a tribute to him downtown where he really got his start." ~ John Cooper, The Mast General Store
"Watson, known for his modesty and humility, wasn’t too keen on the idea at first. But he eventually agreed to the project on one condition: that a plaque on the statute read "Doc Watson – Just one of the people"
"After he married Rosa Lee Carlton in 1947, Doc took to the streets of Boone to support his family. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, he could be found regularly playing on King Street where his statue now attests to Boone’s gratitude and profound affection for her favorite son."
In addition to the dedication, there was a glorious concert at The Jones House featuring David Holt, Charles Welch, Jeff Little, Wayne Henderson, Clint Howard, Herb Key and Creekside Grass.

What a great tribute to a man who has done so very much for American music, and who has always been an example of the American spirit in every positive way.
I bought my first Doc Watson album back in the very early 1970′s and for forty years now I can’t think of anyone I enjoy hearing more!
A fitting tribute to a great American legend.
Goodbye, Doc! You’ve left a remarkable legacy. May you rest in peace, but enjoy playing again with Merle and Earl.
Doc Watson, one the greatest, as a musician and as a person. regards from Belgium
Watson was inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame in 2010
